Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that improves fine lines and wrinkles, scars, acne scarring, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, and pore size. Sounds pretty good, right? Here’s how it works. As we age, collagen and elastin production slow way down. Together, they keep connective tissue firm and help it to hold its shape. As your skin loses collagen, it loses elasticity. On average, we lose about 1% of our collagen EVERY YEAR after the age of 20! The more collagen we lose, the more fine lines and wrinkles appear, which is why it is essential that we work to increase our collagen levels. Microneedling is a great way to accomplish this.
There are many at home systems (not as effective) and professional ones to choose from. We use the Rejuvapen microneedling system. The device is like a vibrating “pen” that uses a disposable, sterile cartridge with nine microneedles that move at 11,000 RPM’s. The advantage of the Rejuvapen compared to other treatments is that it not only activates cell regeneration, it enhances the absorption of peptides that are applied during the treatment. The micro-needles puncture the skin to create a controlled skin injury that kick-starts your skin’s natural ability to heal itself, and in the process produces collagen and elastin that plump and firm skin.
No thanks to its name, microneedling sounds really painful. Actually, it’s only moderately uncomfortable. We apply a topical numbing cream to your skin to keep you comfortable during the procedure. (The entire appointment takes about an hour). Any pinpoint bleeding stops almost immediately because the tiny perforations are already closing up. Afterward, your skin can be somewhat red, similar to a bad sunburn. You may also experience very dry and flaky skin over the next few days and will need to keep it well hydrated/moisturized. It takes only a couple of days for the skin to look fairly normal, but results gradually become apparent. Natural collagen growth happens over weeks and months, so it isn’t an instant fix, but your skin will be much improved over the long term. One thing to know: You’ll need more than one treatment. This isn’t a one-time event. Depending on the areas treated and what you’re trying to achieve, somewhere between four and six microneedling treatments are typically required for optimal results, and yearly maintenance treatments are recommended.
Rejuvapen is great at treating the following conditions:
• fine lines
• acne scars
